How much does it cost to tow a car near Charleston?

Most local tows come down to two things: a hook-up fee to get your car safely on the truck, and a per-mile rate for the drive. A short hop across West Ashley costs less than a haul from Edisto Beach to a dealership in North Charleston. Any company that won't give you a straight number over the phone is one to be careful with.

Distance is the biggest piece. The farther we drive, the more it costs, because that's fuel and time on the truck. A tow from downtown to a shop a few miles away sits at the cheap end. A run down Highway 17 to Edisto, or out to one of the sea islands, takes longer, so it's more. Tell us where the car is and where it needs to go, and we can give you a real number before we roll.

The vehicle matters too. A sedan on a flatbed is straightforward. A lifted truck, a dually, or anything oversized takes more truck and more care. All-wheel-drive cars and electric vehicles need a flatbed so nothing gets damaged, which we'd bring anyway. Anything bigger than a passenger vehicle is our heavy-duty side, and it's priced differently.

How hard the car is to reach changes things. A car sitting in a parking lot is easy. A truck buried in the pluff mud off a dirt road, or slid into a ditch, needs a winch-out before it can even go on the truck. That's extra work, so it can add to the bill, and we'll tell you on the phone if it sounds like a recovery job.

The situation matters as well. A transport you schedule ahead is different from a 2 a.m. emergency tow after a breakdown. We run around the clock, and we don't gouge you for calling at night, but an after-hours emergency does cost more than a scheduled daytime move. That's normal across the industry, and we'd rather you know it up front.

A couple of other things worth knowing. If you were in a wreck, your insurance often covers the tow, so hang on to the receipt and ask your adjuster. And we'll take your car to the shop or dealership you choose, not just the closest one, so you're not paying to move it twice.

So why don't we just post a flat price? Because a real number depends on all of the above, and a flat rate slapped on a website usually ends up costing you more, not less. What we will do is give you an honest estimate before we send a truck, and stick to it. No surprise charges when we show up, no padded bill at the end. That straight-answer habit is the reason a lot of our customers, and a few local businesses, keep our number saved.
