Semi down on I-95? What happens next
September 9, 2026 · Mitchell's Towing & Recovery
When a loaded truck goes down on I-95, it stops being one driver's problem in about ninety seconds. Traffic backs up, the shoulder gets dangerous, and every hour that rig sits is money off somebody's books. Here is how these calls actually go, from the crew that runs the Colleton County stretch.
First: get safe, then call
If you can still move under power, get past the white line and as far onto the shoulder as the rig will go. Hazards on. If you carry triangles, set them out at proper spacing, because interstate traffic at seventy has no time to react to something it did not expect.
Then get out on the passenger side and get behind the guardrail if there is one. Standing on the driver's side of a disabled truck on I-95 is one of the more dangerous things a person can do in this county. Make the call from somewhere safe rather than standing in the breakdown lane.
What we need to know
For heavy work, the details decide which truck rolls, so vague information costs you time. Tell us the exit or mile marker and the direction of travel. What the vehicle is: tractor only, tractor and loaded trailer, box truck, bus, RV. Roughly what it weighs and what the freight is. What actually failed, whether that is a blown tire, a dead engine, air system trouble, or a wreck. And whether it is upright, in the ditch, or on its side.
That last one matters more than anything else. Uprighting a rolled truck is a different job from towing a dead one, and it takes different rigging and more time.
Why the right truck matters
A standard wrecker cannot move a loaded tractor-trailer, and trying is how equipment gets damaged and people get hurt. Heavy-duty recovery means a heavy wrecker with the rating, the winches, and the rigging to do it under control.
Load shifts are their own category. When freight moves inside a trailer, the entire rig is unstable, and nothing gets towed until the load is stabilized or re-worked. Drivers sometimes want to skip that step to save time. We will not, because that is how a bad day becomes a wreck.
The straight version of the timeline
Nobody wants to hear it, but recovery is not fast. A straightforward heavy tow is one thing. A rollover with a load, coordinated with troopers and DOT while live traffic runs past, takes hours, and any company that promises you otherwise on the phone is guessing.
What we do instead is give a straight window and keep you posted. Fleet managers can plan around a straight number. They cannot plan around an optimistic one that slips three times.
For fleets and insurance
Commercial recovery comes with paperwork, and we treat it as part of the job. Photos of the scene and the equipment, clean documentation for the claim file, and billing that works the way an account needs it to. A local insurance agency refers all of its clients to us, which tells you how the paperwork side tends to go.
If your trucks run this corridor regularly, it is worth setting up a commercial account before you need one. When a truck is down at 2 a.m., you want to make one call, not shop for a vendor.
Where we run
Our heavy wrecker covers I-95 around Walterboro at exits 53 and 57, plus Highway 17 through Jacksonboro and Parkers Ferry, and I-26 and I-526 through North Charleston. We also handle the equipment side, so if a machine needs to come off a trailer or move to a yard, that is heavy transport and it is the same crew.
Call (843) 813-6335, day or night. You will reach someone who can actually send a truck.
